Guion, Lisa A.; Chattaraj, Samantha; Sullivan-Lytle, Stephanie
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v97 n1 76-83 2005
This article proposes a conceptual framework for connecting family and consumer sciences (FCS) programs to the culturally diverse communities of children, youth, and families served. The framework consists of components for achieving culturally inclusive organizations and culturally proactive programs that will lead to more positive outcomes for individuals and communities. However, the focus is on the components that make programs culturally proactive. Specific strategies that FCS educators can employ are reviewed. The proposed conceptual framework draws upon the literature on cultural diversity. Important concepts related to planning and implementing FCS programs for culturally diverse audiences are defined and explained. Embodied within the framework are strategies to enhance the quality and effectiveness of programs serving culturally diverse audiences. (Contains 1 figure and 3 tables.)
