Grandparents University: Wisconsin Program Unites Generations
Geyer, Bonnie Hutchins; Brintnall-Peterson, Mary; Schutt, Sarah
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n2 p55-56 2004
"Grandparents University", a program planned and sponsored collaboratively by the University of Wisconsin--Extension Cooperative Extension Family Living Programs and the Wisconsin Alumni Association, was designed to enhance the relationship that exists between the grandparent and grandchild. In July of each year, grandchildren between the ages of 7 and 14 come with their grandparents to the University of Wisconsin--Madison campus for 2 days of learning and fun in the stimulating university environment. Participants choose from one of six program "majors" for 2 days of hands-on learning experienced together. Programs are limited to 40 participants; grandchild and grandparent must select the same major. The conference opens with a general session featuring a well-known faculty member. Following the first day's classes, participants gather for a tailgate supper and activities with the university mascot, Bucky Badger. To gain a true campus experience, participants may stay together in a university dormitory and eat in a campus dining hall. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony, at which participants receive a "degree" and view a slide show of photos from each of the majors.
