Democracy in Crisis?
O'Neill, Brenda
Education Canada, v46 n1 p40-43 Win 2005-2006
This article discusses the state of Canadian democracy. Although calling Canadian democracy as something to be in a crisis is still debatable, the author expresses worry over the declining turnout levels in recent elections. Canada--along with a number of other liberal democracies--has experienced a significant and consistent decline in election turnout since the 1980s. The author also points out that even when there are no simple answers to the question of what is causing this decline in election turnout, it is clear that the dropping turnout rate among young Canadians is an essential component of the explanation.
