Can We Make Fitness a Wake Up Activity for the Whole School?
Torbert, Marianne
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n6 p36-37 Nov 2005
Studies have shown that physical activity can enhance academic performance (Skolnick, 1981; Summerford, 2001). In this article, the author shares an activity that can be used to help accomplish this goal. It is based on the following considerations: (1) To expand participation in physical activity outside the gym, it is necessary to have an activity that can be done in limited space, such as the classroom; (2) To engage all students, it is necessary to have an activity where everyone can participate, no matter what their present level of fitness; and (3) The technology required for mass communication may require someone to make an audio tape for the activity and operate a PA system.
