Hosting a Family Literacy Night at Your School
McGahey, Michelle
Teacher Librarian, v32 n5 p28 Jun 2005
The idea for a family literacy event resulted because teachers wanted more time to share reading strategies with parents, and parents wanted more information on how they could support and encourage their children with reading at home. With great success, Holy Cross School, Kemptville, Ontario, hosted a Family Literacy Night that coincided with the National Family Literacy Day established by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation. More than 150 parents and 200 students attended. Teachers improved their skills at presenting to parents, parents found the information helpful, and the children were excited to be at school in their pajamas! A similar event might be just what one's community needs. Tips and tactics for hosting a successful family literacy night in one's school follow. At the end of this article, one will find a foolproof checklist that will guide one through the planning stages, ensuring that one has a successful, practically stress-free, and fun event!
