Testimony as Oral History: Lessons from South Africa
Wieder, Alan
Educational Researcher, v33 n6 p23-28 Aug-Sep 2004
The hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and subsequent oral history projects elevated testimony as part of the South African transformation process. In this article, the author argues that testimony as oral history is important as a public forum for people who have been historically invisible. In addition, he contends that two themes of testimony as oral history enhance the understanding of method and meaning in this type of research: (a) analyzing insider/outsider oral history not as binary but rather as a changing, living process, and (b) defining the divide between rapport and trust with the former as a research tool and the latter as a living relationship. Focusing upon oral history methodology from South Africa, the author addresses meaning within the context of testimony as oral history.
