Teaching Music, v13 n3 p5 Dec 2005
When a teacher gives their time to a student, it is more significant to that student than anything else one could do for him or her. Music teachers deal with time all the time. Someone once said that "time is like money: we never have enough." This may seem true; however, time is not like money. One can make more money, but one cannot "make time." One can save money, but one cannot "save time" and put it away to be used later. Dozens of books have been written on how to organize and manage time. This brings the author to the point of this column. Because time is finite, it is extremely valuable. How one uses his time reveals what he values. Music teachers are renowned for giving of their time to students. Yes, they have a set schedule for their classes when they teach students, but they probably go beyond that "required" time. They have special rehearsals. They provide special help to individual students who need it. They listen to students; not just when students perform, but when they share their successes and problems.
