This article begins with a sobering and poignant first-person account written by a first year middle school counselor describing her attempts to cope in the aftermath of a suicide by a student in her school. A brief review of the literature dealing with possible contributing factors to suicide that are unique to teens, with particular emphasis on family influences and some common symptoms of presuicidal youth are presented. A discussion of legal issues ensued, with an examination of landmark legal cases to help clarify the extent of liability for school employees related to their work with suicidal adolescents. A brief glance at suicide prevention and intervention issues preceded a more extensive discussion on postvention procedures that can be adapted by school teams. Moreover, the authors propose specific guidelines for postvention opportunities and programs, with an emphasis on the CAPT (counselors, administrators, parents, and teachers) Team Approach. Finally, the authors suggest a training process to familiarize the CAPT team with a four-stage model of postvention process, from the initial shock and disorganization phase to the final emergence toward new goals stage.
