Parents Can Guide Children through the World of Two Languages

Many parents in the United States who speak and value a language other than English feel torn-between wanting their children to develop age-appropriate fluency and literacy in the language of their heritage, and wanting their children to acquire English as quickly and flawlessly as possible. When parents support communication in and acquisition of their children's heritage language, whole families and communities benefit. Furthermore, many school-related skills that parents can teach their children in the native language transfer to a new language; thus, parents can use the native language to help support children's learning in the mainstream classroom. In this article, the authors suggest approaches which can help parents facilitate their children's growth in language.
