Developing appropriate prevocational services for students with visual impairments and additional severe disabilities presents a challenge. A recent pilot transition program acknowledged this difficulty by deciding that "the inclusion of students, who require an extraordinary amount of individual attention to learn skills, would detract from the programs' ability to provide an appropriate experience for other students" (Jorgensen-Smith & Lewis, 2004, p. 212). Saint Joseph's School for the Blind has found that challenge heightened by the need to incorporate prevocational training into a schedule that includes New Jersey core curriculum content standards, essential therapy, and specialist services. However, the school has designed a prevocational program that is meeting the challenge. It offers training, but not employment, and provides opportunities for students of varying ability levels to explore, practice, and experiment with structured learning and work-related activities, both on and off campus. This article describes the details of this prevocational program.
