The purpose of this study was to gain a student's perspective on the differences between alternative and traditional educational settings. Specific objectives were to (1) identify obstacles students perceived in transitioning from alternative settings to traditional school settings and (2) hear the authentic voices of students to determine what would aid them in their success in traditional schools. Six students labeled emotionally/behaviorally disabled assigned to two focus groups were interviewed regarding their experience in both alternative and traditional educational settings. Through the analysis of video- and audio-taped interviews, common themes were revealed across the focus groups. Important to both groups was the desire for authentic relationships with teachers, based on mutual respect, and to be educated in classrooms with small numbers of students.
