Strengthening Controls from Within: Manipulated by Peers
Brasler, Claire E.; Laursen, Erik K.
Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v13 n2 p110 Sum 2004
Since friendship and peer relationships are particularly important to teenagers, students with passive aggressive behaviors frequently and intentionally "set up" more aggressive peers to get them to react and to lose control, guaranteeing a behavioral consequence. As a result, the victim of being set up or "manipulated" also ends up being punished. To help youths, a peer group program, where young people are empowered to take a leading role in resolving conflicts, is developed. This article describes interventions to teach self-control to a youth who was easily manipulated and "set tip" by peers.
