It's Not All Ancient History Now: Connecting the Past by Weaving a Threaded Historical Concept
Endacott, Jason
Social Studies, v96 n5 p227 Sep-Oct 2005
Proving history's relevance to students is a daunting task that social studies educators face everyday as they create lesson plans that they hope will spark their students' interest in learning about the past. Few educators would argue that demonstrating the relevance of the objectives toward which they are teaching is an unnecessary duty. Perhaps those who teach ancient history have the most difficult challenge because students' struggle to see the significance of history increases as they study further and further into the past. Ancient history curricula often cover several thousand years of events, places, people, and dates. Illustrating the importance of each historical event is an unrealistic expectation because there are not enough contact hours in a school year to accomplish such an idealistic goal. It is feasible, however, to help students realize the importance of learning about ancient history in its entirety by weaving a concept, such as societal health, for example, throughout the course. In this article, the author discusses the feasibility of making students realize the importance of ancient history by weaving the concept of societal health throughout an ancient history course.
