Integrating Science with Local Experiences
Black, Kathie
Science Scope, v27 n6 p52-53 Mar 2004
Science exists in many forms, but an appreciation of science as an integral part of every day does not occur in the vacuum of laboratory experience or through classroom activities. Throughout the communities, a plethora of places exist to see science at work, from the usually recommended museums and parks to the less thought of factories and businesses. When students see these examples at work in their everyday life, they appreciate and acknowledge science as an integral part of everything. Field experiences also help bring to life science process skills such as observation, classification, inference, and prediction. Science is no longer the white lab coat or Bill Nye on television. Science knowledge and the processes used to gain that knowledge are all around to experience as commonsense science. Science educators need to help students see the relevancy of science in their everyday lives and, through incorporating field experiences into science learning activities, they can better accomplish this goal.
