Learning from Amphibians
ReMine, Scott
Science Scope, v29 n3 p60-61 Nov-Dec 2005
After searching for an innovative and interactive project that would not only involve the students, but would also be a benefit to the scientific community and to the natural world, the author created an exotic frog nursery-a long-term project that approached science not as a subject full of categories and definitions, but as an ongoing process in which one learns from mistakes and successes. The project first began with a few small frogs and a handful of students, but has flourished to include over 10 different frog species from around the globe, multiple partnerships, and over 100 students working directly with the project on a daily basis. The project started with little prior knowledge of amphibians, their behavior, or their social, physical, and psychological needs. After gathering information about how these exotic frogs reproduce, and what environmental factors were needed to keep them in captivity, a physical environment in which to raise the frogs was erected. Now that the habitat is flourishing, students can participate in every aspect of the development and maintenance of the nursery, including water aging and purification, feedings, cleanings, and construction of the frogs' housing.
