The Power of Reflection in the Research Process
Milam, Peggy
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v21 n6 p26-29 Feb 2005
Recent research on the brain has identified a number of cognitive strategies for constructing knowledge and improving retention of new information. Classroom teachers have begun implementing many of these strategies in their teaching, but what about library media specialists? As leaders and learners in the Information Age, library media specialists must be change agents for introducing new research into practice and modeling best strategies defined by research. Noted cognitive researchers Robert Sylwester, Geoffrey and Renate Caine, and others have identified specific new instructional strategies that have a direct application to information literacy activities in school library media centers. One powerful strategy for constructing knowledge and improving retention of information, reflection, is defined and discussed in this article. Activities that can be incorporated into student research activities that promote reflection are suggested. (Contains 4 tables.)
