Students with Visual Impairments in a Dual-Language Program: A Case Study
Milian, Madeline; Pearson, Vicki
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v99 n11 p715-719 Nov 2005
Dual-language education, or dual immersion, is an educational model that is used in public school districts in the United States to provide education to English-speaking and non-English-speaking children with the goal of having each group of students learn a second language. Over the past 30 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of dual-language programs in the United States. The increasing number of dual-language programs and the benefits that have been shown from attending these programs were the motivating factors for this study. The goal of the study was to examine how students who are visually impaired (that is, are blind or have low vision) can be successfully included in a dual-language program, the necessary factors for the students' success, and the benefits they can derive from participation.
