Knowledge of Normal versus Pathological Memory Aging among Police Officers
Hawley, Karri S.; Garrity, April W.; Cherry, Katie E.
Educational Gerontology, v31 n1 p1-17 Jan 2005
The authors examined police officers' knowledge of memory changes in adulthood utilizing the Knowledge of Memory Aging Questionnaire (KMAQ). The KMAQ is a 28-item true/false questionnaire that covers a broad range of topics related to normal memory aging due to maturational processes and pathological memory aging, such as adult dementia. Results confirmed that the police officers were more accurate on pathological than normal memory aging items. Results also yielded an interaction of gender and question type. An item analysis identified precise areas of strength and weakness in police officers' knowledge of memory aging. Implications for the design of educational programs for police officers are discussed.
