Authors, scientists, mathematicians, newsmakers, pop culture icons, these are the people who are frequently the subject of the infamous "biography reports." Students tend to search for biographical information about individuals who have achieved some degree of distinction (or perhaps notoriety) during their lifetime However. it is important to keep in mind that most people live relatively obscure lives, which reduces the likelihood of finding recorded information about them. The vast majority of people leaves little to remind posterity of their existence except perhaps for an obituary, a will, a few letters and photographs, and sometimes a diary or appointment calendar. This article explores questions students should ask themselves when starting a biography project, to help them uncover clues in their research. A list of on line resources where students can find biographical information is also provided.
