Social Software and The Future of Conferences Right Now
Suter, Vicki; Alexander, Bryan; Kaplan, Pascal
EDUCAUSE Review, v40 n1 p47, 48, 50-52, 54, 56, 58, 59 Jan-Feb 2004
Until recently, the models for conceptualizing activities in physical space and in Internet space have been limited by the thought that one or the other has to be chosen. An initial integration of these apparently disparate spaces emerged when participants in face-to-face meetings (e.g., annual professional society meetings) supplemented their meetings in physical space by creating follow-up listservs and e-mail lists for communication in virtual space. The new conference paradigm identified in this document takes such integration to the next step, allowing the virtual and the physical to intersect. A face-to-face meeting becomes a social archive--accessible, amendable, and mixable throughout the year. The overall conference thus develops into a richer, more useful combination of event and object, an enduring container for experiences and knowledge.
