The Billboard Project
Weaver, Victoria
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n7 p32 Mar 2005
Since 1997, the author coordinated a large-scale billboard project. Coordinated to coincide with the National Art Education Association's celebration of Youth Art Month, strong commitments from faculty, students, administrators, public-relations liaisons, local press, radio, TV, and community businesses have made this project a success. The first billboard was an enlargement of elementary student artwork painted by myself and two other teachers. Although the visual was very dynamic and produced lots of comments from the community, the author felt as if the class had missed the mark. After all, students had only contributed the design while we did the actual painting of the canvas. By 1999, the author had reorganized the project and moved the age level up to secondary. Here the author could find students who would be able to organize, design, and create the billboard, resulting in a truly independent youth art project. The details of the project are described in this article.
