Interrupting the Cycle of Bullying and Victimization in the Elementary Classroom
Siris, Karen; Osterman, Karen
Phi Delta Kappan, v86 n4 p288 Dec 2004
When a group of elementary school teachers decided to pay more attention to bullying in their school, it clearly had an impact on the problem. But beyond that, as the authors report, the teachers' increased awareness of their students' needs translated into a better learning environment overall. Bullying may be viewed as an inevitable part of growing up, but it is hurtful and debilitating for the victims. Many eventually escape with only painful memories; for some, however, the repeated slights, harassment, rejection, and sense of isolation lead to violence--against themselves or others. This article provides personal expressions from a fourth-grader on the affect of bullying.
