Advocacy for music education is a constant. Even though polls and other data continue to reveal the expressed value and importance of music education to the American public, we still must fight for our place in education. Recent state and federal laws, school district policies, learning theories, and methodologies all place arts education at the core of a quality education. Yet we always seem to find ourselves on the defensive. And when asked, most music educators list the need for help and assistance with advocacy-related issues as a major desire. This article discusses the process of electing music advocates and contains the following sections: (1) The Local Issue; (2) Questions for Candidates; (3) Background in the Arts; (4) Knowledge of the District's Programs; (5) Decision Making; and (6) Knowledge of Research Supporting Music Education.
