Using the Case Method to Facilitate Learning
Kunselman, Julie C.; Johnson, Kathrine A.
College Teaching, v52 n3 p87 Sum 2004
Case studies were applied in six courses to help students (1) understand complex and complicated issues and describe interrelated processes; (2) discuss policy- and decision-making ideologies that either are politically or socially charged; and (3) engage in informative and focused classroom discussion. Students' written comments and scaled responses suggest that the case method was an effective way to enhance student learning. Standardized student evaluations also suggest benefits in applying case studies specifically in criminal justice courses and more generally in other areas of social sciences and professional studies.
