No Disposable Kids: A Developmental Look at Disposability
Nichols, Polly
Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v13 n1 p5 Spr 2004
This article is about the most worrisome and challenging of youth, the angriest and most delinquent, the ones who get into frequent fights, often with weapons, and brag about it. More often boys than girls, they are likely to be gang affiliated and to abuse drugs and alcohol. It helps to learn what is known about how they become kids that people want to dispose of. Then chinks can be found in the fortress of bad luck, bad genes, and bad company that start them on their developmental paths, so that there is some hope to divert them from the dead-ends that might lie ahead. This article draws from recent research on genetics, criminology, and psychiatry that informs an approach to youth most likely to be treated as "disposable."
