Integrating Home, School, and Community Resources: Evaluation of a District-Wide Prevention Program

Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v12 n4 p203 Win 2004
This article presents evaluation data from the Placement Prevention Program, created to meet the needs of students through integration of school, family, and community resources. The Placement Prevention Program relies on the integration of home, school, and community resources within a school district. The program began in 1996 with four goals: 1) to decrease the number of out-of-home placements for students in the district; 2) to increase student success in school as measured by school data, such as attendance and discipline referrals; 3) to increase student success at home, as measured by the stressors and risks identified by the family; and 4) to prevent at-risk students from developing serious difficulties, which warrant entrance into the court system. Services are tailored to individual needs and may include crisis intervention, counseling, intensive supervision, preventive programming, and mentoring. Program evaluation supports that its primary goal of decreasing the number of out-of-home placements has been reached and the goal of increasing student success in school and home has been partially met. Key components identified by staff include working in a collaborative and preventative capacity and also working closely with families.
