Education, v125 n4 p652 Sum 2005
The effectiveness of the Ecological, Futures, and Global (EFG) curriculum was evaluated in a single elementary school. The EFG curriculum is a project-based approach to learning that is integrated into a traditional curriculum. Research comparing project-based learning such as EFG with the traditional curricula has shown potential for several benefits including academic gains, as well as improvements in motivation, self-esteem, problem solving abilities, and social development. The present study compared the EFG curriculum with a traditional curriculum using an experimental group and a contrast group. A total of 461 students in grades 1st through 6th were measured. Also, 30 teachers participated in this study. Although the results were mixed, some findings showed that the EFG students experienced higher academic achievement gains as well as greater student and teacher ratings of satisfaction. The analyses also showed that grade level was an important factor in academic gains and student attitudes. The present study was limited by the small sample size from a single school. Future research should better control for curriculum participation at each grade level to ensure more powerful comparisons.
