Problem-Solving Appraisal: Helping Normal People Lead Better Lives
Heppner, P. Paul; Witty, Thomas E.; Dixon, Wayne A.
Counseling Psychologist, v32 n3 p466-472 2004
We are very grateful for the thoughtful, scholarly, and insightful comments of the reactants and appreciate the kind words about our Major Contribution. One of the goals of the Major Contribution was to review the existing literature on problem-solving appraisal as measured by the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) (Heppner, 1988) and, subsequently, to identify promising research directions that might stimulate future research and theory development. In addition to the ideas we presented in the Major Contribution, the reactants provided a wealth of observations and suggestions that will likely stimulate research directions on problem-solving appraisal. Moreover, the reactants' suggestions extend the work to a wide range of preventive and remedial interventions that could make a significant difference in people's lives. In short, reactants all made a number of excellent points and provide a rich discussion. We welcome the opportunity to respond to some of the reactants' comments; we regret that space limitations prevent us from responding to all of them.We organize our initial responses into three general categories pertaining to (a) broad conceptualizations of the problem-solving appraisal literature, (b) future research directions, and (c) practice implications. We then conclude by discussing some broader reflections on developing and measuring psychological constructs.
