Moving Out of Our Comfort Zones
Forrest, Linda
Counseling Psychologist, v32 n2 p225-234 Mar 2004
I was asked to comment on Romano and Kachgal's (2004) major contribution from the perspective of an academic administrator (associate dean in a college of education) as well as a leader in the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17 representative to the American Psychological Association [APA] Council) and APA (i.e., member of the Board of Educational Affairs with oversight responsibilities for education in psychology aswell as psychology in education). These various positions mean that I have had the opportunity to be involved in planning several national conferences. I also served as the Board of Education Affairs liaison to the APA Committee on Accreditation and chaired the BEA Subcommittee on Advocacy that produced a model curriculum on advocacy training (APA Education Directorate, 2003a). Finally, I just returned from a 3-day national meeting of deans of colleges of education. These different responsibilities provide me with the opportunity to be exposed to big picture issues (e.g., trends, pressures) in K-12 education, higher education, and psychology. Thus, my comments on Romano and Kachgal?s article reflect these experiences.
