Financial Conflicts of Interest in the School Psychology Assessment Literature
Truscott, Stephen D.; Baumgart, Mary B.; Rogers, Keba M.
School Psychology Quarterly, v19 n2 p166-178 Jun 2004
Recent scrutiny of medical and biotechnology research raises serious concerns about the potential for financial conflicts of interest (FCOIs) to bias research, impede the free flow of scientific information, and use scientific journals to influence consumers about the relative qualities of products produced for profit (e.g., pharmaceuticals). Potentially, similar problems exist in school psychology research, especially regarding assessment instruments. This research reviewed five major school psychology journals and one related psychoeducational assessment journal from 1997 to 2001 to search for FCOIs in assessment-related literature. The aim of this was to determine the prevalence of FCOIs and whether authors disclose potential conflicts. FCOIs occurred in 26% of the articles. FCOI prevalence was not significantly different between journals. Researchers always cited their previous authorship of a test or competing test, but only one explicit mention of an FCOI was found in any manuscript, notation, or journal. Although results suggest that FCOIs are common, review of ethical guidelines, position statements, and policies revealed that the professional organizations and journals have done little to respond to the problem. Consumers should be aware of the potential problems associated with FCOI and evaluate such literature carefully. Professional associations, researchers, and journal editors should establish policies for FCOI disclosure.
