Perspectives London policy and practice in higher education, v8 n2 p45-49 Apr 2004
As part of the movement to greater social inclusion, a number of initiatives have been created to build bridges between the school and further education sectors and universities. In England, this kind of activity comes under the Partners 4 Progression (P4P) initiative. In Scotland, such initiatives are more regionally based: the thrust of widening participation initiatives is encompassed at the upper strategic level through four Regional Fora, which were created to reflect both national imperatives and more local needs and priorities. This paper describes an initiative that forms a part of the overall strategy of the University of Aberdeen. It was developed within the national framework for raising aspirations and promoting progression to higher education. It also responds to local and regional needs expressed by local authorities, subject-based groups and individual schools. The project is now in an operational phase and will focus on developing and evaluating the events already discussed and providing information to local teachers and school students. In parallel there will be ongoing consultation with school and University staff, school students and parents as appropriate.
