Early Child Development and Care, v174 n1 p3-11 Jan 2004
One of the responsibilities involved with teaching is disciplining, an area where teachers teach their male and female students in accord with their beliefs and expectations as to which behaviors are appropriate in which situations. In this study, teachers? beliefs about the use of appropriate discipline philosophies for the misbehaviors of male and female students were explored. Participants were one hundred and thirty teachers employed in public schools located in a mid sized southeastern city in the US. Teachers were found to have different beliefs with regard to the use of discipline philosophies for the misbehaviors of male and female students. The Beliefs About Discipline Inventory (BADI) was designed by the authors to find the teachers? beliefs related to discipline philosophies while disciplining male and female students. BADI contained eight vignettes illustrating four types of discipline incidents, which were selected using the answers of fifteen early childhood teachers who were asked to describe the most recent discipline incidents in their classrooms. In the first, male students were doing the misbehavior, whereas in the second, female students were. After three cycles of revision, the final form of the instrument was obtained. The results of this investigation indicate that teachers believed in the use of different discipline philosophies when male and female students misbehaved. The most significant implication of this study was that teacher training and education programs need to be re evaluated and geared at raising awareness toward gender issues and thus creating equal opportunities for boys and girls.
