Differences in Behavior, Psychological Factors, and Environmental Factors Associated with Participation in School Sports and Other Activities in Adolescence.
Harrison, Patricia A.; Narayan, Gopalakrishnan
Journal of School Health, v73 n3 p113-20 Mar 2003
Investigated whether 9th graders' participation in school team sports, exclusively or in combination with other extracurricular activities, would relate to higher levels of psychological functioning and healthy behavior than participation in other extracurricular activities alone or nonparticipation. Participants in any type of extracurricular activity were significantly more likely than nonparticipants to have healthy lifestyles. Engagement in sports was associated with some unique benefits.
