Teachers as Sources of Middle School Students' Motivational Identity: Variable-Centered and Person-Centered Analytic Approaches.
Murdock, Tamera B.; Miller, Angela
Elementary School Journal, v103 n4 p383-99 Mar 2003
Variable-centered (regression) and person-centered (cluster analytic) techniques were used to examine the relations between eighth-grade students' achievement motivation and their perceptions of teacher caring. Motivation was assessed using students' self-reports of academic self-efficacy, intrinsic valuing of education, and teacher ratings of effort. Findings indicated that perceived teacher caring accounted for significant amounts of variance in all measures of motivation. (Author)
