Development of Phonological and Orthographic Processing in Reading Aloud, in Silent Reading, and in Spelling: A Four-Year Longitudinal Study.
Sprenger-Charolles, Liliane; Siegel, Linda S.; Bechennec, Danielle; Serniclaes, Willy
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v84 n3 p194-217 Mar 2003
Development of children's phonological and orthographic processing was studied from middle of grade 1 to end of grade 4. Signs of reliance on phonological processing were found on reading aloud, spelling, and silent reading tasks, even with indicators of reliance on orthographic processing. Phonological and orthographic processing appeared to be reciprocally related. Very early reliance on the phonological procedure seems to be the bootstrapping mechanism for reading acquisition.
