Differences between Mothers' and Fathers' Advice-Giving Style and Content: Relations with Social Competence and Psychological Functioning in Middle Childhood.
McDowell, David J.; Parke, Ross D.; Wang, Shirley J.
Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, v49 n1 p55-76 Jan 2003
Study examined relations between mothers' and fathers' advice-giving style and content and third-graders' social competence and psychosocial functioning at a single time point and across a one-year period. Findings indicated that advice-giving style predicted social competence, concurrently and one year later, above and beyond content. Fathers' advice-giving predicted peer and teacher social competence ratings beyond mothers' advice- giving, concurrently and one year later. Advice-giving style related to loneliness and depression.
