Coping Style and Depression in Early Adolescence: Relationships to Gender, Gender Role, and Implicit Beliefs.
Broderick, Patricia C.; Korteland, Constance
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v46 n7-8 p201-13 Apr 2002
Three studies investigated interrelationships among coping styles, gender roles, and level of depression for early adolescents. Girls displayed more depression than boys. More highly depressed girls demonstrated coping patterns similar to those of depressed adolescent and adult women. People who identified with feminine gender roles showed increased depression with age. Both genders believed men should not ruminate, but rather distract themselves from problems. (SM)
