Children's Competence and Value Beliefs from Childhood through Adolescence: Growth Trajectories in Two Male-Sex-Typed Domains.
Fredricks, Jennifer A.; Eccles, Jacquelynne S.
Developmental Psychology, v38 n4 p519-33 Jul 2002
Examined gender differences in 514 children's competence and value beliefs from first through twelfth grade, and the relation of these trends to initial differences in parents' perceptions of children's ability. Found that gender differences in competence and value beliefs related to sports and mathematics. Gender differences in competence beliefs decreased over time. Parents' initial child ability rating helped to explain mean differences and variations in change rate. (Author/KB)
