Narrative Structure and Lexical Aspect: Conspiring Factors in Second Language Acquisition of Tense-Aspect Morphology.
Bardovi-Harlig, Kathleen
Studies in Second Language Acquisition, v20 n4 p471-508 Dec 1998
Discusses two hypotheses on the distribution of emergent tense-aspect morphology in second language acquisition: aspect hypothesis and discourse hypothesis. Analyzes narrative structure and lexical aspectual class in a single corpus comprising narratives produced by adult learners of English as a Second Language at various proficiency levels. Results suggest both hypotheses are necessary to account for the distribution of verbal morphology in interlanguage. (Author/VWL)
