"If I Don't Know Them, I'll Get Killed Probably": How Children's Concerns about Safety Shape Help-Seeking Behavior.
Spilsbury, James C.
Childhood: A Global Journal of Child Research, v9 n1 p101-17 Feb 2002
Examined 7- to 11-year-olds' perceptions of their Cleveland, Ohio neighborhoods. Found that children in neighborhoods with low and elevated levels of violence were exposed to violence and expressed concerns about victimization. The children described strategies for maintaining personal safety while seeking help; the strategies illustrate children interacting with local environments, interpreting environmental features, and acting accordingly.
