The Interference of Stereotype Threat with Women's Generation of Mathematical Problem-Solving Strategies.
Quinn, Diane M.; Spencer, Steven J.
Journal of Social Issues, v57 n1 p55-71 2001
Investigated whether stereotype threat would depress college women's math performance. In one test, men outperformed women when solving word problems, though women performed equally when problems were converted into numerical equivalents. In another test, participants solved difficult problems in high or reduced stereotype threat conditions. Women were less able to formulate problem solving strategies under high stereotype threat conditions. (SM)
