Using Power and Caring To Mediate White Male Privilege, Equality, and Equity in an Urban Elementary Classroom: Implications for Teacher Preparation.
Parsons, Eileen Carlton
Urban Review, v33 n4 p321-38 Dec 2001
Examined how elementary students in a diverse, urban fourth grade classroom exercised white male privilege, noting the teacher's approach to mediating privilege, equality, and equity. Observation and interview data indicated that white males exercised privilege through outcries, evaluative use of knowledge, and body movements. They perceived more classroom cohesiveness and student involvement. The teacher used power ethically to provide equitable educational experiences and demonstrate caring for all. (SM)
