Antecedents and Behavior-Problem Outcomes of Parental Monitoring and Psychological Control in Early Adolescence.
Pettit, Gregory S.; Laird, Robert D.; Dodge, Kenneth A.; Bates, John E.; Criss, Michael M.
Child Development, v72 n2 p583-98 Mar-Apr 2001
Examined early childhood antecedents and behavior-problem correlates of monitoring and psychological control during early adolescence. Found that monitoring was anteceded by proactive parenting style and advantageous family-ecological characteristics. Psychological control was anteceded by harsh parenting and mothers' report of earlier child externalizing problems. Monitoring related to fewer delinquent behavior problems. Links between psychological control and adjustment were more complex. (Author/KB)
