Becoming Somebody! How Arts Programs Support Positive Identity for Middle School Girls.
Holloway, Debra L.; LeCompte, Margaret D.
Education and Urban Society, v33 n4 p388-408 Aug 2001
Argues that arts education makes it possible for students to imagine themselves out of their current identities, describing how a middle school theater arts program supported female students' positive identities. Observation and interview data indicated that tools gained in the program transformed girls' attitudes toward education and other aspects of their lives, shifting their ideas about themselves and their futures.
