Surveyed college presidents who had "salvaged" their institutions from crisis. Many said problems were greater than anticipated, that they were chosen for their non-academic skills, and that these attributes were helpful in addressing problems. Respondents described a variety of immediate and long-term strategies and offered varying advice; all agreed they would tackle crises again despite the enormous challenges. (EV)
