The Craft of Reference: The Welsh Language and the Division of Labor in Nineteenth Century Slate Quarries.
Manning, H. Paul
Language & Communication, v21 n3 p209-23 Jul 2001
Discusses ideologies of language and the division of labor in nineteenth century Wales, where the slate quarries drew their labor exclusively from monoglot Welsh populations. The division between labor and capital in these quarries correlated to a virtually categorical linguistic opposition between Welsh quarriers and English owners, with the question of proper linguistic and ethnic identity of managers hotly debated on during the period.
