In Search of Fluency: What Is It and How Can We Teach It?
Wood, David
Canadian Modern Language Review, v57 n4 p573-89 Jun 2001
Explores the phenomenon of second language speech fluency and how it may be facilitated through instruction. An overview of research on fluency in second language speech is presented; empirical research is discussed in light of psycholinguistic knowledge about mental processes underlying second language production, and a model is posited that centers on automatic processing and importance of retrieval of a repertoire of formulaic language units in spontaneous speech.
