The Pragmatics of Making Requests in the L2 Workplace: A Case Study of Language Socialization.
Li, Duanduan
Canadian Modern Language Review, v57 n1 p58-87 Sep 2000
An ethnographic case study focuses on the pragmatics of higher-stakes social communications. Illustrates how, through exposure to social interactions and assistance from more competent peers, an immigrant woman came to internalize target language and cultural norms and develop communicative competence in English as a Second Language in the workplace. In particular, she learned how to make requests more directly. (Author/VWL)
