Argues that girls emerge from middle school with lowered sense of self esteem, a discouragement with school, and a school performance that does not match earlier achievements. Examines school strategies of silencing, "revisioning" middle school education, teacher action research to transform school practices, and community building through retreats to address issues of gender equity.
