The Role of Community Service in Identity Development: Normative, Unconventional, and Deviant Orientations.
Youniss, James; McLellan, Jeffrey A.; Su, Yang; Yates, Miranda
Journal of Adolescent Research, v14 n2 p248-61 Apr 1999
Identified predictors of normative, unconventional, and deviant identity orientations among youth in a nationally representative sample of 13,000 high school seniors. Found that frequency of community service substantially increased predictability of identity orientation above background characteristics and part-time work involvement. Most school-based extracurricular activities and part-time work were associated with doing service. (Author/KB)
